European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE)
The European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) is an organisation representing the civil engineering profession in Europe and bringing together professional organisations of civil engineers from countries across Europe. Established in 1985, ECCE aims to strengthen the voice of the European civil engineering profession, promote professional cooperation and the exchange of knowledge, and uphold high professional, ethical and qualification standards. At the heart of the organisation’s work is the contribution of civil engineering to people’s quality of life, a safe and sustainable built environment, and the public interest.
ECCE’s activities extend beyond bringing together the professional community. The organisation actively participates in European policy and professional dialogue, prepares position papers, analyses challenges facing the civil engineering sector, promotes education and continuing professional development, and works to ensure that engineers’ expertise and competence are properly recognised in the development of European policies in areas such as infrastructure, construction, digitalisation, sustainability and other related fields.
ECCE General Meetings
The latest, 82nd ECCE General Meeting in Braga, Portugal, on 18–20 June 2026 was particularly significant as, alongside discussions on current issues affecting the civil
engineering profession, it also saw the adoption of key documents defining the strategic direction of ECCE’s activities for the coming years. The Braga Declaration one of the key outcomes of the 82nd General Meeting.
The ECCE Braga Declaration sets out a shared vision for the European civil engineering community and identifies five strategic priorities:
1. Sustainability and Climate Resilience
ECCE aims to promote low-carbon construction, circular economy principles, efficient resource use and climate-resilient infrastructure.
2. Modernisation of the Construction Sector
Particular emphasis is placed on innovation, digitalisation, Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins, modern methods of construction and
smart infrastructure.
3. Safe, Affordable and Sustainable Housing
The Declaration highlights the need to increase the supply of
high-quality and affordable housing, while maintaining high standards of
safety, sustainability and resilience.
4. Responsible Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence
ECCE advocates for the ethical, transparent and responsible use of
artificial intelligence, while safeguarding engineering professionalism,
accountability and public trust.
5. People, Competence and Professional Leadership
The Declaration emphasises engineering education and training, lifelong
learning, digital skills, continuing professional development and the
development of the next generation of engineers.
The 77th General Meeting of European Council of Civil Engineers will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania and is organised by ECCE together with the Lithuanian Association of Civil Engineers (LSIS).
The part of the General Meeting was The ECCE Forum of Civil Engineers on Sustainability in Construction.
The forum focused on sustainable and resilient construction, digitalisation and BIM, circular approaches to construction materials, and innovative solutions for the cities of the future.
The forum seems to form new form of future ECCE General Meetings.
